Validation Requirements

To begin the validation process, pilots must submit certified copies of the following documents:

• Pilot licence

• Valid medical certificate

• Radio licence

• English language proficiency certificate (if issued separately)

• Last three pages of your logbook

• Passport

• Two passport-sized photographs

• Completed SACAA licence validation application form

What’s Involved in the Validation Process

The SACAA validation process is straightforward and typically completed within a short time frame.

Air Law Examination

• 25 multiple-choice questions

• 75% pass mark required

• Focuses on South African aviation regulations

• A study guide is provided in advance to help you prepare

Flight Test

• Approximately 2–3 hours

• Includes:

  • Stalls

  • Steep turns

  • Navigation flight

• Conducted with a qualified examiner to confirm competence and familiarity with local procedures

Local Briefing

• Overview of South African airspace

• Weather patterns and decision-making

• Aircraft performance and flight planning considerations

Aircraft Type Rating

• Minimum 2 hours on the aircraft type (if not already rated)

• Ensures safe and confident operation of local training aircraft

Validity & Duration

• Licence validation is valid for up to 60 months, or until your original licence expires (whichever comes first)

• Pilots should plan for a minimum of 2 days to complete the full validation process
